Methods for acidification of soapstock and recovery of acidulated fatty acids, conversion of the acidulated fatty acids to esters, and crystallizing the acidulated fatty acids from the extraction solvent using urea are disclosed. The novel method of adding both a monohydric alcohol to the soapstock to lower viscosity and a strong acid to hydrolyse the soaps prevents the formation of emulsions of soaps and oils, see figure 1. This allows the quantitative recovery of fatty acids and glyceride from the soapstock by removal of the alcohol by evaporation. Alternately, the fatty acids and glyceride may be converted to esters of monohydric alcohols. Heating the fatty acid, glyceride and monohydric alcohol solution produces fatty esters of the extractive alcohol. Chilling the fatty acid, glyceride, and monohydrici alcohol solution allows the selective crystallization of fatty acids. Treating the fatty acid, glyceride and monohydric alcohol solution with urea allows the specific crystallization of fatty acids. The acid water released from this novel process is heavily laden with both organic and inorganic solutes. Processes for recovery of valuable inorganic and organic constituents from the acid water are also described.

L'invention concerne des procédés d'acidulation de pâte de neutralisation et la récupération d'acides gras acidulés, la conversion de ces acides gras acidulés en esters et la cristallisation des acides gras acidulés du solvant d'extraction par l'urée. Le nouveau procédé d'adjonction simultanée d'alcool monohydrique à la pâte de neutralisation afin de réduire la viscosité et d'un acide fort afin d'hydrolyser les savons empêche la formation d'émulsions de savons et d'huiles (voir figure 1). Ceci permet la récupération importante d'acides gras et de glycéride provenant de la pâte de neutralisation par retrait de l'alcool par évaporation. Les acides gras et la glycéride peuvent être alternativement convertis en esters d'alcools monohydriques. Le chauffage de la solution d'acide gras, de glycéride et d'alcool monohydrique produit des esters gras à partir de l'alcool d'extraction. Le refroidissement de la solution d'acide gras, de glycéride et d'alcool monohydrique permet la cristallisation sélective d'acides gras. Le traitement de la solution d'acide gras, de glycéride et d'alcool monohydrique permet la cristallisation spécifique d'acides gras. L'eau acide générée par ce nouveau procédé est lourdement chargée de solutés inorganiques et organiques. L'invention concerne également le procédé de récupération de constituants organiques et inorganiques provenant de l'eau acide.
