A method for solidifying a radioactive iodine-containing waste, in which volatilization of radioactive iodine outward can be suppressed during solidification, and a solidified waste having a high level of confinement of radioactive iodine and a long term stability can be obtained. The method comprised mixing a granular waste containing radioactive iodine, e.g. a granular iodine adsorbent having radioactive iodine adsorbed and collected thereon, with a metal powder, e.g. a copper powder, having a corrosion resistance in an environment of solidified waste disposal, filling the resulting mixture in a metal capsule, and subjecting the whole to hot isostatic pressing to effect solidification. In the resulting solidified waste, particles of the radioactive iodine-containing adsorbents are dispersed and retained in the sintered matrix of the metal powder formed through the isostatic pressing.
Méthode de solidification de déchets contenant de l'iode radioactif qui permet d'éliminer la volatisation dans l'air au cours de la solidification, d'obtenir un déchet solide présentant un degré élevé de confinement de l'iode radioactif, et une stabilité à long terme. La méthode consiste à mélanger un déchet granulaire contenant de l'iode radioactif, p. ex. un absorbant granulaire d'iode ayant absorbé et recueilli de l'iode radioactif et une poudre métallique, p. ex. une poudre de cuivre ayant une résistance à la corrosion dans un milieu d'élimination de déchets solides, à remplir une capsule métallique du mélange obtenu et à soumettre le tout à un pressage isostatique à haute température pour provoquer la solidification. Dans le déchet solide obtenu, les particules d'absorbant contenant de l'iode radioactif sont dispersées et contenues dans une matrice frittée de la poudre métallique formée au cours de pressage isostatique.
