The invention relates to a method for sorting postal items in order to prepare the postman rounds on a postal item sorting machine having an inlet and a set of sorting outlets, that comprises the following steps: consecutively loading at the inlet of the machine a first batch of postal items (L1) and a second batch of postal items (L2), and directing the postal items of the first batch towards a first sub-assembly (3A) of sorting outlets and the postal items of the second batch towards a second sub-assembly (3B) of sorting outlets; while the postal items of the second batch are directed towards the second sub-assembly of sorting outlets, reloading (SW) the inlet of the machine with the postal items collected in the first assembly of sorting outlets, and while the postal items of the first batch are directed towards the first sub-assembly of sorting outlets, reloading (SW) the inlet of the machine with the postal items collected in the second assembly of sorting outlets.
