ABSTRACT To start up a converter station of a high-voltage d.c. transmission system, the station being initially not connected to any functioning three-phase system, the active power required is drawn from the d.c. side of the converter station, and the reactive power required is drawn from an independent reactive power source. The latter is initially run up to the a.c. operating voltage and frequency, whereupon the controllable rectifier elements of the converter station are triggered. During run-up, converter losses may be made up by an active power source on the a.c. side e.g. a Diesel stand-by generator. The converter station can then be used to transmit power from a network to start a generating plant associated with the converter station, after which the generating plant can feed the network through the converter station. The converter station may be part of a HVDC transmission network, or of an internal HVDC block of a generating plant.
