METHOD FOR SUPPRESSING INTERNAL OXIDATION IN STEEL WHIT ANTIMONY ADDITION ABSTRACT A cold rolled steel strip contains alloying elements, such as Al and Si, which have an affinity for oxygen greater than that of iron. During annealing of the strip, these alloying elements undergo oxidation to form an internal oxidation layer adjacent the surface of the strip. Formation of such an internal oxidation layer in the cold rolled steel strip is impeded by adding antimony to the steel and depletion of the antimony prior to annealing the cold rolled strip is minimized by minimizing annealing and pickling of the strip before the strip attains substantially its final thick- ness.
