The subject invention provides an assay for determining a poly-l-lysine concentration suitable for synthesizing microcapsules having a predetermined permeability which comprises synthesizing a series of microcapsules using different poly-l-lysine concentrations. Accordingly, the subject invention also provides a method of synthesizing microcapsules of a predetermined permeability.
