This invention relates to a system and method of starting a water jet propulsion system for a ship, said propulsion system including a stator shell (1) adapted to be mounted to the hull and having a nozzle (4) ending in an outlet (5) with a cross-sectional outlet area (A), an impeller housing (6) attached to the stator shell (1) and having an upstream inlet (7), and an impeller rotatably mounted in the impeller housing (6) for receiving water from the inlet (7) and discharging it through the nozzle (4) of the stator shell (1) so as to create a water jet upon rotation of the impeller, said method including reducing the outlet area by partly closing the nozzle (4) during a start up phase of the water jet propulsion system, wherein there is provided a back flow hindering arrangement (8,9; 18), arranged to hinder air to enter into said impeller housing via said nozzle (4).

La présente invention concerne un système et un procédé pour démarrer un système de propulsion de navire par hydrojet. Ce système comprend une coque de stator (1) conçue pour se monter sur la coque du navire et comportant une buse (4) se terminant pas un orifice de sortie (5) définissant une superficie d'orifice de sortie en coupe (A), un logement de rotor (6) solidaire de la coque de stator (1) et comportant un orifice d'entrée en amont (7), et un rotor monté rotatif dans le logement de rotor (6) de façon à recevoir l'eau de l'orifice d'entrée (7) et de la décharger au travers de la buse (4) de la coque de stator (1) de façon à créer un jet d'eau lors de la rotation du rotor. Le procédé consiste, pendant la phase de démarrage du système de propulsion par hydrojet, à réduire la superficie de l'orifice de sortie en fermant partiellement la buse (4), le système comprenant à cet effet un dispositif s'opposant au reflux (8, 9; 18), disposé de façon à empêcher l'air d'entrer dans le logement du rotor en passant pas la buse (4).
