In a cyclically recurring first tamping pass (A) of a method for tamping a plurality of sleepers of a track, with the track lifted into a target position, two sleeper groups (x, y), each comprising at least two sleepers (22), are tamped simultaneously. A maximum of two sleepers (z) are arranged between the said sleeper groups which are tamped in a second tamping pass independent of the first tamping pass (A) and performed subsequently.
