ABSTRACT This invention is directed to a method for the tertiary extraction of petroleum by flooding the petroleum deposits with water or with alkaline, water- soluble substances. During or after the flooding with hot water, caustic soda is introduced as a flooding agent into the deposit which has been heated by the hot water, the upper temperature limit thereof being set only high enough to ensure that the emulsion formed from the petrol- eum and the caustic soda remains essentially stable.
