The invention relates to the recognition of digital finger prints, more particularly to recognition by an elongate bar of sensors able to detect crests and valleys of finger prints when a finger is passed in a relative manner in front of a sensor in an essentially parallel manner in relation to the direction of elongation of said bar. The inventive method comprises the following operations: successive partially overlapping images are acquired under the control of a processor; displacement of the first image in relation to a second image is examined in order to provide a better correlation between the two images; said displacement component is determined in terms of pixels in a perpendicular direction with respect to the elongate sensor; the displacement component is compared to at least one threshold; according to the result of the comparison, a delay T imposed by the processor before the acquisition of a following image is preserved, or increased or decreased by a time increment dT. As a result, the correlation search is adapted according to the speed, which is unknown, of displacement of the finger.

L'invention concerne la reconnaissance d'empreintes digitales, et plus particulièrement la reconnaissance à partir d'une barrette allongée de capteurs capables de détecter les crêtes et vallées des empreintes digitales lors du défilement relatif d'un doigt par rapport au capteur sensiblement perpendiculairement à la direction d'allongement de la barrette. Le procédé selon l'invention comprend les opérations suivantes, acquérir une succession d'images partielles en recouvrement mutuel, sous le contrôle d'un processeur, rechercher quel est le déplacement d'une première image, par rapport à une seconde image, qui procure la meilleure corrélation entre les deux images, et déterminer, en nombre de pixels d'image, la composante de ce déplacement dans la direction perpendiculaire au capteur allongé, comparer la composante de déplacement à au moins un seuil, en fonction du résultat de la comparaison, conserver, ou augmenter ou décrémenter d'un incrément de temps dT, un retard T imposé par le processeur avant l'acquisition d'une image suivante. On adapte ainsi la recherche de corrélation à la vitesse, non connue, de déplacement du doigt.
