The present invention relates to a method for the automatic adjustment in a comminutor of the grinding gap determining the grain structure of the comminuted material, this comminutor comprising a first rotating comminuting tool and at least one additional comminuting tool allocated thereto. In particular, it relates to a method for operating an impact mill in which, to avoid substantial changes to the grain structure of the comminuted material, the impactor is moved towards the rotor by means of a drive mechanism when the impact mill is empty until first contact with the impeller bars occurs and after the resulting noises are noted by a microphone, the movement is reversed until the previously given grinding gap is reached. In accordance with the invention, a filter circuit arrangement is provided which allows a computer to identify the noises resulting from contact of the comminutinq tools: and to completely automatically carry out the steps required for the adjustment as provided in a predetermined program. The present invention also relates to an apparatus for carrying out the method.
