ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention relates to a method for the calibration or checking of dynamometers. In accordance with the invention, a force is applied to the dynamometer subjected to calibration or checking through a master dynamometer. The force is pro- gressively changed in magnitude. In addition, the force applied to the dynamometer subjected to calibration is retained after each application of force. Simultaneously, the master dyna- mometer is relieved of the force applied. An apparatus for this calibration includes a bedplate, a first frame rigidly attached to the bedplate, a second frame installed on the first frame with provision for free displacement, and a master dyna- mometer interposed between the two frames. Interposed between the two frames is also a dynamometer subjected to calibration or checking. A force is applied to the dynamometer subjected to calibration or checking, and a calibrated force is applied to the dynamometer through the master dynamometer. A second force is applied only to the dynamometer subjected to cali- bration or checking thus assuring that the master dynamometer is relieved of the force applied.
