ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In the continuous production of n-butyraldehyde by selective hydrogenation of crotonaldehyde, the hydrogenation is carried out in the liquid phase, in the presence of a palladium aluminum oxide-carrier catalyst which contains the palladium in an edge-zone of the carrier-particle from 0.05 to 0.2 mm in thickness. The palladium content of this catalyst amounts to between 0.1 and 0.6% by weight. The aluminum-oxide carrier, with a specific pore-volume of 0.4 to 0.6 cm3/g, has 40-60% of its pore-volume in pores > 7.5 nm in diameter and an inner surface of 130 to 160 m2/g. Hydrogenation is carried out at absolute pressures of 5 to 50 bars and at temperatures of 20 to 100°C. High-purity n-butyraldehyde is obtained with- out unwanted by-products. The novel method has improved space-time yields.
