ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Total cholesterol or bound cholesterol in a sample is determined by treating the sample with cholesterol esterase, thereby releasing the bound cholesterol, and then determining the resulting total cholesterol by known methods: specifically preferred are cholesterol esterases from Candida rugosa ATCC 14830, Rhizopus spec. WS 90027 and Asperqillus spec. WS 90030.
