ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method is disclosed for the dry regeneration of a spent catalyst formed in the shape of a large number of tubes, a honeycomb, or a large number of plates. The method comprises grinding the surfaces of the interiors of the many holes in the spent catalyst with an abrasive material. Additional aspects of the method include using silica sand for the abrasive material, causing the abrasive material to flow through the interiors of the catalyst holes on a current of air; or to flow through the interiors of the catalyst holes under its own weight and by vibration. In addition the abrasive material may consist of brushes, may comprise sandpaper, or may consist of files. In an alternative method, a catalyst edge protection grid is first placed on top of the spent catalyst, and then the abrasive material is caused to flow through the interiors of the catalyst holes in order to grind the interior surfaces of the catalyst holes.
