The invention provides a method and apparatus using infrared thermography for predicting an unknown value of an internal composition characteristic of velvet antler in vivo, in vitro, and/or during cooling or warming. The method involves generating a predictive model using a sample population of antlers to determine a relationship between a known input variable and a known value for the composition characteristic; and using the predictive model to predict the unknown value of the same composition characteristic in an antler not selected from the sample population. Using this value, a map can be made to identify sites and levels of the composition characteristic within the antler. The invention provides a method for predicting an internal composition characteristic of a velvet antler by obtaining an infrared thermographic image of the antler and visually ranking the image by comparison to a corresponding image of an antler with the desired composition characteristic. A method to predict maturity by comparing temperature differences between the antler's tip and base is provided.
L'invention concerne un procédé et un appareil mettant en oeuvre la thermographie infrarouge aux fins de prévision d'une valeur inconnue d'une caractéristique de la composition interne de bois de velours <i>in vivo</i>, <i>in vitro</i> et/ou pendant le refroidissement ou le réchauffement. Le procédé consiste à produire un model prédictif au moyen d'une population échantillon de bois, de manière à déterminer une relation entre une variable d'entrée connue et une valeur connue pour la caractéristique de la composition; et utiliser le modèle prédictif pour prévoir la valeur inconnue de la même caractéristique de la composition dans un bois qui n'a pas été sélectionné à partir de la population échantillon. L'utilisation de cette valeur permet de créer une carte conçue pour identifier des sites et des niveaux de la caractéristique de la composition dans le bois. L'invention concerne également un procédé permettant de prévoir une caractéristique de la composition interne d'un bois de velours par obtention d'une image thermographique infrarouge du bois et par classement visuel de l'image par comparaison avec une image correspondante d'un bois avec la caractéristique de la composition souhaitée. L'invention concerne enfin un procédé permettant de prévoir la maturité et consistant à comparer des différences de température entre le sommet et la base du bois.
