Contrary to conventional chain mills which are generally used for size reduction of soft material, the primary objective of this invention is the induction of fractures to interconnect pores in hard ore in which pores are isolated. Fractures are induced by the high-velocity impact by rotating chains. Size reduction of fed particles is of secondary concern in this process. By operating the shattering mechanism at supersonic velocities, the resulting sonic shock waves further propagate and enhance these fractures during comminution. The process is designed to require minimal maintenance and be as economical as possible.
