A method for the manufacture of aluminum oxide from bauxite containing iron oxide, silica and titania impurities while avoiding problems associated with using carbon as a reducing agent. The method comprises fusing a mixture of bauxite containing 1 to 5 percent carbon by weight of mixture, 3 to 15 percent metallic aluminum by weight of mixture, and 5 to 15 percent metallic iron by weight of mixture and removing fused aluminum oxide from an upper layer of the fusion. The invention also includes fused aluminum oxide manufactured by the fusion method of the invention, without further purification, which contains an iron oxide content less than one percent, essentially no aluminum carbide, and a silica content below one percent, compared with fused aluminum oxide made from bauxite using carbon as the primary reducing agent and which contains less silica when compared with fused aluminum oxide made from bauxite using a reducing agent consisting essentially of aluminum.

Méthode de production de l'oxyde d'aluminium à partir de bauxite contenant de l'oxyde de fer, des impuretés de silice et de titane permettant d'éviter les problèmes liés à l'utilisation du carbone comme agent réducteur. La méthode consiste à faire fondre un mélange de bauxite contenant de 1 à 5 % de carbone en poids, de 3 à 15 % d'aluminium métallique en poids et de 5 à 15 % de fer métallique en poids et à retirer l'oxyde d'aluminium fondu d'une couche supérieure du matériau en fusion. L'invention vise aussi l'oxyde d'aluminium fondu produit au moyen de la méthode de fusion propre à l'invention, sans autre purification, qui renferme moins d'un pour cent d'oxyde de fer, essentiellement pas de carbure d'aluminium, et moins d'un pour cent de silice, comparativement à l'oxyde d'aluminium produit à partir de la bauxite en utilisant du carbone comme principal agent réducteur et qui renferme moins de silice lorsqu'on le compare à l'oxyde d'aluminium fondu produit à partir de la bauxite en utilisant un agent réducteur composé essentiellement d'aluminium.
