ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method for the measurement of capacitances, particularly low capacitances, utilizes a measurement oscillator having an output frequency which is a function of the capacitance to be connected to the input terminals of the circuit determining the frequency of the oscillator. A known reference capacitance is alternately connected with the capacitance to be measured, to the input terminals of the measurement oscillator via a switching arrangement. The capacitance to be measured and the reference capacitance are connected, alternately one after the other, to the input terminals of the measurement oscillator for the time of an equal number of cycles of the measurement oscillator. The frequency dependent upon the capacitance connected to the input terminals of the measurement oscillator is passed to a frequency divider having a division ratio (N) which directly determines the number of the switching cycles. The square wave obtained from the output of the frequency divider controls switches which alternately connect the known reference capacitance and the capacitance to be measured, each in turn, to the input terminals of the measurement oscillator, so that an exchange of the level of the square wave produces an operation of the switches in a manner whereby the capacitance to be measured that is the next one in the sequence is connected in place of the reference capacitance, and vice versa. The method may be used in radiosondes, in telemeter measurement of pressure, temperature and/or humidity. The measurement circuit is accurate and thus eliminates the effects of switching phenomena.
