INVENTORS: REINHARD BLUHM, HERBERT HOLIK and PETER MIRSBERGER INVENTION: METHOD FOR THE MECHANICAL-THERMAL DEWATERING OF A FIBER STOCK WEB ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE During dewatering of a fibrous web, for instance a paper web, the latter in conjunction with a porous band, typically a felt, suitable for removal of the separated out water, is guided through an extended nip defining an extended pressing zone. In the extended pressing zone the fibrous web, as viewed in a predeterminate travel direction thereof, is exposed in defined sections thereof to different high pressures and different high temperatures. Upon arrival at the extended pressing zone the fibrous web is heated and in the first section of the extended pressing zone it is compressed to such an extent that there prevails a complete saturation of the capillaries of the fibrous web. There is thus formed a hydraulic pressure which transfers water into the porous band. In a second section of the extended pressing zone the web treatment pressure is reduced such that the hydraulic pressure tends to migrate towards null, but the capillaries in the fibrous web are still saturated. In the extended pressing zone there is formed due to the reduced pressure steam which augments and increases the transfer of water into the porous band. The steam flows from a heated surface of the apparatus through the paper web while entraining free surface water out of the web capillaries into the porous band. Prior to departure of the fibrous web out of the extended pressing zone the pressure is reduced such that when the fibrous web migrates to a subsequent ambient pressure region there does not arise any explosion-like expansion of the steam and damage to the fibrous web.
