Software and process that provides a moderately secure, easy to use, fully automatic and transparent means of sending and receiving electronic mail ("email") via the Internet using public-key cryptography and peer-to-peer ("P2P") networking, without the need for the user to change the software or processes that they currently use to retrieve, read, compose and send email, and without the use of a centralized control process or store and forward system. The invention includes: a central database and server that contains informs ion about which computers are currently using the solution; a proxy that provides message encryption and decryption services and manages the process of establishing a P2P connection between the sending and receiving systems. and; a validation process that provides reasonable assurance that the sender and receiver of an email message has the authority to send and receive email messages using the email addresses contained in the header of the message.
