ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE : A method is disclosed for preparing certain 2,5- dialkyl-4-hydroxy-2,3-dihydrofuran-3-ones, said method comprising the step of cyclizing the corresponding diol- diones with a cation exchange resin in an aqueous or an aqueous-alcoholic medium and at the reflux temperature of the reaction mixture.
