ABSTRACT A method for preparing aluminium oxide powder having a high .alpha. proportion, crystallite sizes of approximately 0.1 µm and narrow particle size distribution is disclosed starting from customary Bayer aluminium hydroxide (gibbsite) or from aluminium oxide calcined at a low temperature. The starting material is wet- disagglomerated, mixed with .alpha.-aluminium oxide nuclei, dried and calcined. The calcination produces agglomerates with the suitable crystallite size required, and which only need be disagglomerated to the particle size required. The .alpha.- aluminium oxide powder prepared according to this invention is particularly suitable as a starting material for the production of high-performance ceramics, such as blanking dies.
