ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Electrocatalysts which may be used in the preparation of electrodes for electrochemical cells comprise an inorganic refractory oxide having a surface area of from about 1 to about 500 square meters per gram and a car- bonaceous pyropolymer forming at least a monolayer on the refractory oxide, the surface of said pyropolymer having at least one catalytically active metal impregnated thereon.
