The invention relates to a method for the production of .alpha.-methylstyrene by anionic polymerization of an .alpha. -methylstyrene monomer. Said method successively comprises the following steps: a) a stage in which a solution containing the .alpha. -methylstyrene monomer and an aprotic apolar solvent is prepared; b) a stage in which the solution prepared in a) is neutralized including the addition of an efficient amount of at least one monofunctional organometallic initiator to said solution in order to neutralize the protic sources of the solution prepared in a); a stage in which the solution obtained in b) is cooled to a temperature of less than 0 ·C; d) a stage in which polymerization is initiated, including the addition of a predetermined amount of said monofunctional initiator to the solution cooled in c); e) a stage in which polymerization is propagated, including the addition of an aprotic polar solvent to the solution prepared in d); f) a termination stage including the addition of a protic polar solvent to the solution prepared in e).

L'invention se rapporte à un procédé de préparation de poly (.alpha.- méthylstyrène) par polymérisation anionique du monomère (.alpha. - méthylstyrène, ledit procédé comprenant successivement les étapes suivantes : a) une étape de préparation d'une solution comprenant le monomère (.alpha.- méthylstyrène et un solvant apolaire aprotique ; b) une étape de neutralisation de la solution préparée en a) comprenant l'ajout à cette solution d'une quantité efficace d'au moins un amorceur organométallique monofonctionnel, de manière à neutraliser les sources protiques de la solution préparée en a); c) une étape de refroidissement de la solution obtenue en b) à une température inférieure à 0~C ; d) une étape d'amorçage de la polymérisation comprenant l~ajout à la solution refroidie en c) d~une quantitée prédéterminée dudit amorceur monofonctionnel ; e) une étape de propagation de la polymérisation comprenant l~addition à la solution préparée en d) d~un solvant polaire aprotique , ledit solvant étant ajouté en quantité inférieure à celle du solvant apolaire aprotique ; f) une étape de terminaison comprenant l~ajout à la solution préparée en e) d~un solvant polaire protique.
