Abstract: Method for the pretreatment of a lumpy carbon carrier Suggested is a method of pretreatment of a lumpy carbon carrier suitable for forming a fluidized bed and a solid bed used in the production of pig iron fron iron ore. The ore is pre-reduced in one or a plurality of reduction plants and the thus produced iron sponge is subsequently fused in a melt-down gasifier with the help of the lumpy carbon carrier and an oxygen-containing gas and is final reduced. Thereby the carbon carrier is fed into the upper part and the oxygen-containing gas is fed in to the lower part of the melt-down gasifier. These materials form, together with the iron sponge, a fluidized bed in the melt-down gasifier. Below same, a solid bed is formed consisting of said lumpy carbon carrier. For such carbon carrier are used either lumpy coal tending to burst on shock-like thermal load, which is subjected to a pre- treatment aiming at diminishing this bursting tendency prior to it being fed into said melt-down gasifier, or fine coal blended with a binder and granulated, which was preferably ground prior to admixing said binder.
