METHOD FOR THE PRODUCTION OF ALPHA-TYPE HEMIHYDRATED GYPSUM ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Alpha-type hemihydrated gypsum is obtained by suspending gypsum in an aqueous solution containing a specific monocarboxylate selected from magnesium salts and zinc salts of lower monocarboxylic acids having 1 to 4 carbon atoms in a concentration of not less than 10% by weight and heating the resultant suspension in a specific temperature range under atmospheric pressure. The production of this alpha-type hemihydrated gypsum is accomplished at an increased rate by adding a monocarboxylic acid having 1 to 4 carbon atoms to the aqueous solution, suspending gypsum in the resultant solution and heating the resultant suspension under the atmospheric pressure. By this means alpha-type gypsum hemi- hydrate can be produced by an efficient method which does not require the use of expensive pressure vessels.
