ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: .beta.-Naphthol can be produced in high yields by allowing propylene and naphthalene to contact each other for a period of from 0.05 to 5.0 hours at a temperature in the range of from 230 to 350°C under a pressure of from atmospheric pressure to 50 kg/cm2 G. in the presence of a catalyst, adding to the resul- tant .alpha.-isomer-containing .beta.-monoisopropyl naphthalene a specific solvent about 0.5 to about 10 times as great by weight to produce a mixture, cooling the mixture in conjunction with seed cystals added thereto to a temperature in the range of from -20°C to about -30°C thereby causing the .beta.-monoisopropyl naphthalene to crystallize out, subsequently separating the solid from the liquid at the existing crystallizing temperature and having the isopropyl group of the resultant high-purity .beta.-monoisopropyl naphthalene substituted with a hydroxyl group by oxidizing the high-purity .beta.-monoisopropyl naphthalene and subsequently decomposing the resultant hydroperoxide in an acidic state. The solvent mentioned above is a compound having properties such that it forms no azeotrope with monoisopropyl naphthalene and shows a solidifying point which is lower than the eutectic point for .alpha.-monoisopropyl naphthalene and .beta.-monoisopropyl naphthalene and the mixture result ing from the addition of the compound to monoisopropyl naphthalene at all times shows a viscosity which is lower than that of mono- isopropyl naphthalene. This compound is also possessed of a polar group.
