The method is carried out in reactor (500), which includes refractory sidewalls (502) that are adapted to contain the molten metal (504). A side-penetrating lance (518) penetrates the furnace near the bottom of the reactor and is provided for the optional introduction of oxygen for the purpose of heating the reactor (500).
