This invention relates to a method for the production of a monoclonal antibody to an antigen comprising immunizing a antigen-free animal with antigen to permit antibody-producing cells to produce antibodies to the antigen; removing at least a portion of the antibody-producing cells from the antigen-free animal; forming a hybridoma by fusing one of the anti-body-producing cells with an immortalizing cell wherein the hybridoma is capable of producing a monoclonal antibody to the antigen; propagating the hybridoma; and harvesting the monoclonal antibodies produced by the hybridoma; with the proviso that the monoclonal antibody is an IgG antibody or an IgM antibody. The invention is useful for in vitro and in vivo clinical diagnostics and therapeutics.
