METHOD FOR THE PRODUCTION OF POROUS CARBON SHEET Abstract of the Disclosure A porous carbon sheet having improved physical properties is obtained by dispersing oxidized pitch fibers in a liquid comprising at least one organic compound having at least one hydroxyl group and a boiling point of not less than 150°C, subsequently forming the resultant dispersion in the form of a sheet, heating the sheet thus obtained at tem- peratures in the range of from 50 to 300°C and thereafter, carbonizing the sheet in a nonoxidizing atmosphere. The oxidized pitch fibers have a diameter in the range of 6 to 100 µ and a fiber length/fiber diameter ratio of not less than 2, and contain 45 - 90% by weight of nitrobenzene insolubles and 55 - 90% by weight of fixed carbon, which fibers when being tested by using a flow tester having a nozzle of 1 mm in diameter under a load of 10 Kg/cm2 at temperatures of not more than 300°, resist being melted and discharged from the nozzle. The carbon sheet is especially useful as a base material for fuel cell electrodes.
