Method for the purification of chlorine gas with a content of until 10 weight % air, wherein the contaminated gas is supplied to the high pressure side of a membrane separator. The chlorine gas is permeated through a rubbery non-porous membrane material and the impurities withheld. The pressure ratio between the high pressure side and low pressure side of the membrane is kept at 3-7. It is preferred to use vacuum on the low pressure side. Polydimethylsiloxane is suitable as selective membrane. It is preferred to use a composite membrane.
