ABSTRACT A novel enzyme of bilirubin oxidase and a conventional enzyme of laccase oxidize bilirubin to biliverdin without formation of hydrogen peroxide. Conjugated bilirubin in biological fluid may be caused to react with the bilirubin oxidase of a microorganism of genus Myrothecium origin, while total bilirubin in biological fluid may be caused to react with the bilirubin oxidase or laccase under the presence of specific additive compound. In the conventional enzymatic methods of quantitative determination of glu- cose, cholesterol, neutral fats, free fatty acids, phospholipids or uric acid all existing in biological fluid, the interference of such determination by bilirubin coexisting in said fluid may be prevented by adding bilirubin oxidase or laccase together with said specific additive compound to the reaction system.
