A METHOD FOR THE RECOVERY OF A VOLATILE COMPOUND BY FERMENTATION OF A CARBOHYDRATE MATERIAL ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The method for recovery of a volatile organic compound such as alcohol from resulting fermentation of a carbohydrate material in a fermentor, wherein the improvement involves conveying a part of the fermentation liquid to a separate vessel, standing under vacuum and, there, removing the volatile compound in the form of a vapor. The bulk of the carbon dioxide produced during the fermentation is removed before the fermentation liquid is conveyed to the vacuum vessel. The method may be performed on a batch basis or as a continuous single stage process or as a multi-stage process.
