Abstract The specification describes a method for extracting metals of metal containing substances such as minerals and ores. A mixture of such substances with organic substances is produced. For each equivalent of metal one equivalent is made available in the organic substances of the reducing element and furthermore a sufficient quantity of organic substances is added in order to produce an exothermic re- action. The mixture is pressed to form particles or small bodies, which are introduced, at atmospheric temperature, into a high temperature zone, of at least 800° C, so that an exothermic reaction ensues. This reaction leads to a rise in the temperature at least as far as the fusing point of the metal. The pellets are surrounded with a gas-imper- meable casing before introduction into the high temperature zone and after sharing.
