ABSTRACT A method for mining, drying and curing bentonite clay in situ wherein that overburden of non-clay material which may exist is removed and the bentonite ore body exposed to such tools as discs, "roto-tills" or other and any such devices which may be set or controlled to loosen, break-up and/or open and expose a tier of the bentonite ore body to the drying and curing effects of the natural environment and with the maturation of the dried-cured tier or segment, removal and the concomitant exposure of unprocessed bentonite, a portion of which represents the next tier or segment to be opened for drying and curing with such sequencing taking place in tiers or segments until the bentonite ore body is ex- hausted.
