ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Separation of isotopes by pulsed laser beams to selectively excite one isotope and subsequent chemical or physical separation. More complete and effective excitation of the isotope to be excited is obtained by a combination of a) intermittent or periodic flow of the stream of isotope compounds at constant intervals, b) a flow of isotope vapor of short time duration of the order of milliseconds, c) adiabatic cooling to below 100 K, d) flowing the cooled mixture to an irradiation zone in accordance with the intermittent flow, e) subjecting the cooled mixture during the short time duration of flow to consecutive pulses of a number of consecutively fired lasers to effect substantially complete excitation of the isotope compound to be excited.
