Abstract of the Invention The present invention provides a novel process for the preparation of substituted pyridine-2,3-dicarboxylic acids by the sequential peroxide-hypochlorite oxidations of substituted-8- hydroxyquinolines. The substituted pyridine-2,3-dicarboxylic acids have the formula (I) Image (I) wherein X is hydrogen, halogen or methyl with the proviso that if Y and Z form a ring in which YZ comprise (CH2)n where n is 3 or 4 then X is hydrogen and Y and Z are each selected from radicals such as hydrogen, halogen, C1-C6alkyl or together can form a ring in which YZ comprise (CH2)n where n is 3 or 4. The substituted 8-hydroxyquinolines have the formula II Image II where X, Y and Z are as above.
