A system for transmission and storage of X-ray scans of containers for security assurance is disclosed. The system comprises (a) a security scanner computer workstation for use in conjunction with an X-ray based scanner, either 2D or 3D CT based, the security scanner computer having a network connection and local hard disk storage for images, (2) the digital image files generated by the scanner having DICOM compatible data, (3) a DICOM conformant optical archive storage unit attached to the network for storage of acquired DICOM compatible data, and (4) a software on the workstation which is able to retrieve information about the scanned item's ownership and weight and store it as part of the DICOM data.
