The present invention relates to uses and methods for treating or preventing a viral infection selected from the group consisting of herpes simplex virus, varicella zoster virus, respiratory syncytial virus and cytomegalovirus in a host comprising using a therapeutically effective amount of a compound having the formula (I) or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. The present invention also includes pharmaceutical compositions and combinations.
