Processes are provided for recovering precious metals from precious metal-containing materials. The processes comprise the steps of contacting the precious metal-containing material with a lixiviant to solubilize the precious metal, and electrowinning a resulting pregnant solution containing the solubilized precious metal in the presence of a sulfite to form a recovered precious metal and a barren solution.
