The present invention provides an epoxy compound that has a hydrocarbon backbone, that is water-soluble, and which does not contain an ether or ester linkage in its backbone for use in cross-linking bioprosthetic tissue. Examples of suitable epoxide agents include mono- or diepoxides that have the following basic formulas: Monoeproxide: (see formula I) Diepoxide: (see formula II) where n = 1 to 10.
