A method of treating vented or fugitive methane streams, comprising the steps of providing two or more thermal catalytic converters coupled with pressure sensitive valves to form a catalytic converter assembly and at least one pilot heat source to initiate a catalytic reaction within one of the thermal catalytic converters. When a vented or fugitive methane stream is channelled through the catalytic converter assembly, the catalytic converters start up and shut down in sequence in response to variations in the supply of methane gas. Preferably, heat generated in initiated catalytic converters is used to sequentially initiate a catalytic reaction in remaining adjacent uninitiated catalytic converters.
