The present invention provides a method for treating a viral infection in a subject. The method comprises administering to the subject an amount of 5-aminolevulinic acid to cause virus-infected cells to accumulate protoporphyrin in amounts such that upon application of a sufficient dose of red light, the virus-infected, protoporphyrin-accumulated cells will be destroyed; and applying a sufficient dose of red light to the virus-infected, protoporphyrin-accumulated cells to destroy the virus-infected, protoporphyrin-accumulated cells.

La présente invention se rapporte à un procédé de traitement d'une infection virale affectant un sujet. Ce procédé consiste: à administrer à un sujet une quantité d'acide 5-aminolévulinique afin de provoquer dans les cellules infectées par le virus l'accumulation de la protoporphyrine dans des quantités telles que, lors de l'application d'une dose suffisante d'une lumière rouge, les cellules infectées par le virus, dans lesquelles s'est accumulée la protoporphyrine, soient détruites; et à appliquer une dose suffisante de lumière rouge sur les cellules infectées par le virus dans lesquelles s'est accumulée la protoporphyrine afin que celles-ci soient détruites.
