ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method for uniformly depositing a high surface area washcoat on a substrate is disclosed. The method involves preparing an aqueous suspension of a high surface area material, the suspension having a pH less than 7. A substrate is submerged in this suspension and then removed from the suspension. The pH of the colloidal suspension contained within passageways of the substrate is increased to a pH greater than 10 whereby the colloidal suspension forms a thixotropic gel which is uniformly distributed along the passageways of the substrate. The substrate is dried in order to produce a substrate with a uniformly dispersed, high surface material thereon.
