A separation apparatus (38) for cutting open the lateral part of the packaging of a paper reel carries, on a carriage (39) movable in a separation direction, a base plate (40) which can be moved back and forth in a transverse direction. It carries a scanning unit (41) which rolls on the lateral part and carriers which are displaceable in the transverse direction and carry in each case a pre-cutting disc (47), two cutting discs (50a, b) for loosening purposes, two brushes (53a, b) and a plough (55). After the scanning unit (41) has been positioned just behind an exposed end face of the paper reel, said parts are advanced in the transverse direction and the separation apparatus (38) is moved in the separation direction. The pre-cutting disc (47) makes a preliminary cut which is, for example, 0.4 mm deep. For facilitating the insertion of the tip (56) of the plough (55) into the end face, loosening cuts are also made beforehand on both sides thereof and the edge region is raised by means of the brushes (53a, b). Finally, the separation apparatus (38) is moved to the opposite end face of the paper reel. Since the lateral part is cut through by the pre-cutting disc (47), the forces acting on the plough (55) are small and there is no damage to the boundary layer on which it slides.
