A method is provided for enhancing corrosion resistance of metallic substrates by forming an elemental aluminum or aluminum alloy coating in a vacuum and then exposing the coated substrate to a plasma that includes oxygen or halogen moieties. The plasma exposure is conducted at evacuated pressures and forms a corrosion resistant film for the substrate. This corrosion resistant film is formed quite quickly, without the use of corrosive acids (as in prior art anodizing processes), yet provides significantly improved corrosion resistance with respect to air exposed, aluminum coated substrates.
