ABSTRACT A method of adding propulsive force to an ice breaker in the process of breaking the ice in a frozen sea by allowing her hull to ride on it which is characterized by utilizing a strongly tractive force of a winch. In this method, a pile is first put up, and then, the cable connected with the pile is winded up by the winch according to the advance of the ship. This method may save the fuel, and shorten the breaking time.
