A method of addressing a matrix of ferroelectric liquid crystal cells involving the blanking of all lines of pixels within the display prior to addressing with information for display. The blanking pulse (16) has a lower amplitude (Vs/m) and a longer du- ration (mt) than the select pulse (12). By reducing the amplitude of the blanking pulse (16), it may be applied to a given line at or below eight lines before the necessary select pulse {12) is applied in order to display information. This has the effect of maximis- ing the display brightness and reducing flicker.
