A method of affixing fitments to metal stock used for forming cylindrical can bodies, the fitments being adapted to receive bails in order to attach the bails to containers made from the can bodies. The method comprises forming a shallow well in a first surface of the metal stock at each location to which a fitment is to be adhered to the metal stock. Each shallow well having a generally planar region. A corrosion resistant polymeric protective layer is applied to the surface of the metal stock opposing the first surface. A metal fitment having a base, a sidewall and a top, the base having a planar flange for mating with the generally planar region of the shallow well, is provided. An adhesive layer between the planar region of the shallow well and the planar flange of the fitment is provided. The metal fitment is located in the shallow well such that the planar flange is brought adjacent the generally planar region of the shallow well, with the adhesive layer therebetween. The planar flange of the metal fitment is adhesively bonded to the planar region of the shallow well, thereby joining the fitment to the metal stock without damaging the corrosion resistant protective layer. Containers by the method described above.
